Here is the top motivator myth:
"Money is a motivator"
Money. The truth is, that although money helps us all, it is not true that money is a motivator.
In fact, money is a far stronger de-motivator! If it was a motivator, you could give someone a raise and they would stay motivated forever. Take away two dollars, or give Susie two dollars more, and Mr. Smith will gripe and find another job in a heartbeat. Or worse, stay in his job and become a negative team influencer. "The Complainer." Money is either a short-term satisfier, or a long-term dis-satisfier. Take care when using it as a tool.
People are self-motivated. They do exactly what they want. Just like cats!
A cat just does whatever he wants and is happy about it because he knows himself - his true nature.
For us humans, it seems to be far more complicated. We do what we really want to do, even if our brains are telling us otherwise. In the end though, we do exactly what we really feel is most aligned to our heart. This shows up in resistance, which looks a lot like not being motivated.
Let's say I am frustrated because I want to be the company president. I may say I want to be the President of ACME Appliance, but what am I really doing toward this goal?
Well, I'm mostly beating myself up for doing nothing. Just not motivated.
Either I am kidding myself about what I truly want to do, or I have a serious block preventing me from taking the steps necessary to achieve it.
The key is to systematically explore what my motivation is for being the president. My TRUE nature. And then get lined up with it, and eliminate everything that is in the way.
Or discover that I have been not achieving it because I really don't want to be the president. Being president just doesn't fit who I am. Makes me feel pressured and nervous. In reality, I just don't know what I want to do. I hold this goal because it is what I told myself I SHOULD do. It's a family business. Or I don't know how to do anything else. (Of course I do!)
Or perhaps this goal or desire never really belonged to me in the first place: It was what dad wanted me to be! So I didn't have any motivational steam in me to do it.
Whatever the case, Motivation is in there! And there is nothing more powerful than inspiration to get your engine moving. Removing a few de-motivators is sometimes all we need to do to get unstuck.
Getting all the junk out of the road is the first step. Then becoming aware and understanding what really inspires you and allowing it to flow in your life is the key to letting the caged energy free and motoring yourself toward the dream!
